If you’re out of distilled water, the safest short-term option is to use clean, low-mineral water while you restock—then clean the humidifier a bit more often. What you can use depends on your humidifier type and how sensitive you are to mineral dust and buildup.
1) Reverse osmosis (RO) water
RO water is very low in dissolved minerals, so it behaves a lot like distilled water in most humidifiers. If you already have an RO filter at home, this is usually the closest swap.
2) Deionized (DI) water
DI water is also low in ions (minerals). It can reduce white dust and scale, though availability varies (often sold for appliances or lab use).
3) Filtered tap water (short-term)
Pitcher-filtered or fridge-filtered water can help a little, but most basic filters don’t remove enough minerals to fully prevent white dust or buildup. If your tap water is hard, expect more frequent cleaning and possible residue on nearby surfaces.
4) Plain tap water (last resort)
Tap water will work in a pinch, but minerals can leave scale inside the tank and, in some ultrasonic models, show up as “white dust.” If you must use it, use the cleanest cold water available and rinse/refill daily.
Do not add essential oils to the water tank unless your model explicitly supports it—many humidifiers can be damaged and it can create respiratory irritation. Avoid adding salt, baking soda, peroxide, or disinfectants to the tank unless the manufacturer instructs it, since additives can corrode parts or aerosolize irritants.
Empty and rinse the tank daily, wipe any film before it hardens, and descale weekly (often with diluted white vinegar, then thorough rinsing). If you notice white dust around an ultrasonic humidifier, switch to lower-mineral water as soon as possible and keep the unit away from electronics.
For more guidance on choosing and maintaining an evaporative model that’s designed to minimize mineral dust, see this humidifier guide.
Rinse and refill daily, and do a deeper clean/descale at least once a week. If you have hard water or see buildup quickly, increase deep cleaning to twice weekly.
