Ipe (also written “IPE”) is a dense tropical hardwood that holds up well outdoors, but it still benefits from routine cleaning to keep dirt from grinding into the surface and to prevent mildew in shaded, damp areas. The safest approach is gentle washing first, then stepping up only if needed.
Brush off loose debris with a soft broom or dry cloth. If your furniture has cushions or metal hardware nearby, remove cushions and cover or avoid soaking any parts that shouldn’t stay wet.
Mix a small amount of mild dish soap in a bucket of warm water. Use a soft-bristle brush or non-abrasive sponge to scrub with the grain. This lifts grime without scuffing the wood. Rinse thoroughly with clean water so no soap film remains.
If you notice dark specks or slick areas, scrub a bit longer with the soapy solution and a soft brush. Avoid harsh, high-alkaline cleaners that can discolor hardwood. For tough staining, use a wood cleaner designed for hardwood outdoor furniture and follow the label directions.
Rinse well and let the pieces air-dry. For faster drying and fewer water marks, wipe down flat surfaces with a clean towel after rinsing.
Clean ipe will naturally weather to a silvery gray outdoors. If you prefer the richer brown tone, apply an ipe hardwood oil after the furniture is fully dry and the surface is clean. Wipe off excess so the finish doesn’t stay tacky.

Wash it every few weeks during heavy use or pollen season, and at least once per season for general upkeep. Clean sooner if you see mildew starting in shaded or humid areas.
