Tap water can work in a baby humidifier, but it isn’t always the best choice. Many municipal water supplies contain minerals (like calcium and magnesium) that can build up inside the unit, create residue, and—especially in ultrasonic humidifiers—leave a fine “white dust” on nearby surfaces. While that dust is mostly mineral content, it can be irritating to some babies with sensitive airways and it can make cleaning more frequent.
If your home has relatively soft tap water and you’re using an evaporative humidifier (which uses a wick/filter), tap water is often acceptable. Evaporative models generally trap minerals in the wick, which reduces the chance they end up in the air. Even so, mineral buildup can still shorten filter life and increase maintenance.
If you have hard water, see scale in kettles or faucets, or notice white dust around the humidifier, switch to distilled or demineralized water. Tap water can also lead to faster biofilm or slime formation if the tank isn’t cleaned regularly—something to take seriously in a nursery where air quality matters.
Distilled water is the simplest option because it has very low mineral content, helping reduce deposits and dust. Demineralized water (or water from a properly maintained demineralization cartridge, if your humidifier supports one) can also help. If using filtered water, remember that many basic carbon filters improve taste and odor but don’t remove most dissolved minerals.
Even with distilled water, a baby humidifier needs regular rinsing, drying, and scheduled deep cleaning to prevent mold and bacterial growth. Emptying the tank daily, letting parts dry, and following the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions will do more for safety than any single water choice.

Empty and rinse the tank daily, then deep-clean on the schedule in your manual (often weekly). If you notice any film, odor, or visible buildup, clean it immediately and let all parts dry completely.
